With the SU holidays season upon us.  I thought I would ask Alison who has been a team leader for many years at both Lendrick Muir and Kingscross (Arran) about why should you send a child to camp.

What are SU Holidays?

SU Scotland runs camps, or SU holidays as they now known, at LENDRICK MUIR, as well as various other locations which usually a week long, although sometimes shorter.  They provide young people aged from 10-18 with a variety of activities, in an environment where the Christian message is unapologetically shared in a way which is relevant to the campers. But why, you may ask, in a day when there are a host of residential experiences available to our young people, would you choose an SU camp to send them to?

So many reasons

Arguably there are a number of reasons, ranging from the quality of the leadership, to the scope of the activities. All the leaders who look after the participants at camp are volunteers, who willingly, and sacrificially, give their time to these camps as they know them to be of value. Many have been campers themselves in the past, and want to give back to another generation of young people. All are fully accredited by SU’s Volunteer process and hold PVG’s with the organisation, in addition to having provided recent references.

ACTIVITIES range from the high end watersports and high ropes climbing, to a range of crafts and social games – so there is something for all campers to enjoy. Many of the campers make good friendships at camp, and one of the reasons so many return year on year is to meet up with these folk who may live many miles away making seeing one another away from camp quiet difficult. Fortunately, the advent of social media makes keeping in touch so much easier for this generation of campers than it was twenty years ago, when many parents, myself included, used to despair of the phone bills their teenagers were running up! For many of those attending SU camps, these friendships last in adulthood, often forming the basis of a social group to meet up with at university or college.

Why not?!

In short, encouraging, enabling or agreeing to,  your child or teenager going to an SU camp, whether at Lendrick Muir or at one of the other sites which SU uses, can be providing them with an opportunity to make new friends, try new activities, experience new pastimes, have a whole lot of fun, and engage with the Christian gospel, hear about Jesus, or learn how to take their faith seriously. Rather than think “why send my child to SU camp?” why not think “why not to?!”
